NMS is a faceless application that forces system sleep at a set idle time or on Screen Saver activation. It can simply follow Energy Savers settings in an "install and forget" way or operate completely independently. For me this solves the recurring problem of an invariably corrupt power manager preventing automatic sleep and the frequent dead batteries that result. Simple as this solution is it has worked great for me. My laptop ALWAYS sleeps. As a response to user requests NMS now has provisions to allow relatively fine per-application control over holding or delaying sleep and correctly accounts for unattended but intentional idle-wake events like the modem answering or a scheduled wake ups. If you can put your machine to sleep manually short of being REQUIRED to close the lid if it's a laptop then NMS should be able to restore unattended sleeping for you.
